About me

Just like my car, I too am originally from Germany. I was born there too many years ago to remember, but then when I was four, my family and I emigrated to then rural Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

In 1959 I became a Canadian. In 1963 we moved once again, this time to southern California.

In 1967 I went back to Germany for a while to attend Max von Laue Gymnasium in Koblenz. It was a fun year and a half, but in the fall of 1968 when my parents moved to British Columbia, Canada, I too came back from Germany.

The years that followed included a stint at Simon Fraser University, as well as Douglas College and BCIT to suite career needs in the construction industry. In 1975 my job took me to Edmonton Alberta. In 1977 I got married, and a year later we were transferred back to the Vancouver branch, and we set up our home in Port Coquitlam.

I have been a Port Coquitlam resident ever since. My children Krista and Eric came along in 1980 and 1983. Over the years since, things have constantly changed, jobs, career direction and marriage. In 1985 I entered the computer age with my first MacIntosh along with an intended career change. The Mac and my skills in construction scheduling formed the basis of my first venture into consulting and working on my own. I have kept up the consulting business in one form or another since then, but also spent a six years working at two of Vancouver's Apple Computer Dealers. These days I specialize in MacIntosh computer support, and database consulting with FileMaker Pro for Mac and Windows.

Notice how my hair style of the very early days (bald) has become popular again.

Cars in my life [Back to Top]

Cars, particularly German ones have always been a part of my life. From our families first Volkswagen Beetle back in 1957. (We drove it from Ontario to California in 1963 with a U-Haul trailer full of our possessions in 1963.) In California we had two other Volkswagens, a newer Beetle in 1964, and a VW Squareback (VW Variant 1600) in 1966. When I was in Germany for school, I got a VW Variant 1600 as well and even brought it back to Canada with me. When my parents moved to BC they bought a new VW Van, hooked a travel trailer to it and made the move.

During my time in Germany I lived with my uncle Erich who ran a trucking business and a chauffeur service. It was at that time I fell in love with his rare Bauer BMW 502 Cabriolet. If my parents hadn't been so insistent on being sensible, I probably would have gotten a BMW 1600 instead of the VW Variant. The Variant didn't survive an accident in 1971, and was replaced for a short time by 'Mellow Yellow' a Toyota Corolla, which was soon replaced by 'Vincent Van Go' a 1972 VW Van. (Stop laughing, don't you name your cars.) Then there was a period of heavy American company cars, but in 1983 we sold 'Ohgee' the wife's Datsun B210 and bought 'Smokey' a Honda Accord. Then in 1991 it was back to German cars when I took over 'Zipper' a 1982 VW Rabbit Diesel which had been my Dad's daily commuter car. In 1995 I replaced Zipper with 'Teddy' a VW Golf TDI Turbo diesel. And that brings us to recent years (1997) when I found my 1992 BMW 318i Cabrio sun bimmer 'sunbmr' sitting on consignment from his first owner. (My son also calls the Bimmer my MCV - Midlife Crisis Vehicle.) The rest is history.

Kids [Back to Top]

I have a daughter named Krista, and a son named Eric. Daughter is a student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. Check out her page.

Son recently moved to Bellingham with his mom. We still get to get together quite often. He is now taller than I am. We used to have a deal that for every day I have too much fun in the BMW I had to take him to the local go-kart track so he could get his share of driving fun as well. Well that has changed, since he ibecame of 'carmitzvah' age, he now has his drivers license, and had been to a club driving school, and gets to drive the BMW when we are together. Check out his page too.

Work [Back to Top]

I do so many things, and wear so many hats sometimes that I'm really going to have to think about this one. Basically I am a computer consultant specializing in Macintosh and FileMaker Pro databases. I also do construction scheduling and project planning work for clients using the computer as my tool. Past construction scheduling projects include monitoring the schedules for the #9 paper machine upgrade for MacMillan Bloedel in Powell River BC, and the $47 million renovations to the Empress Hotel in Victoria BC, as well as several major high rise and bridge projects in the Vancouver area. Currently I involved in several complex database systems for membership tracking, construction cost control and document tracking.

This page is not intended to be an advertisement, but if you are in the Greater Vancouver Lower Mainland area of Vancouver, and use a Mac and a database for your work, I'd be more than pleased to talk to you about the services I may be able to offer. eMail me at rolf@drommer.com

Pets (former) [Back to Top]

I don't have any pets any more, but once I did have some...
HP was my pet Hedgehog. HP is actually his nickname, and is short for Hedgepickles, the name my kids gave him when we first got him. Perfect companion for when I want to go driving, since he didn't really care to come along.
HP passed away Sept 7, 2000

As well I kind of felt like part owner and parent of 'Smudge' the cat who became known Tybalt and lived with my son. While he was still young and called 'Smudge' he stayed with me a for a couple of weeks after my daughter Krista first brought him home. He was a Manx and as mentioned Krista brought home from a Church Youth Group outing in the interior of BC called the Uncle Pat's weekend. He was so cute we just had to keep him. He became a very big cat and elegant, and deserved his new name of Tybalt.
Tybalt passed away May 18, 2000 after a traffic accident

Fun [Back to Top]

One of the major fun things I used to get involved with twice a year (spring and fall) is a church retreat at a camp called Sasamat Outdoor Centre. It is a local camp/retreat tucked away in at the edge of Belcarra Regional Park on Sasamat Lake. We have been going there since 1987 when the camp first opened it's group facilities to the public. We are a group of Unitarians and friends from Beacon Unitarian Church in Coquitlam. It is a lot of fun for all who attend. We get the camp to ourselves on the Victoria Day (Canadian Holiday) land weekend which is the third weekend in May, and again on either the second or third weekend in September depending on where Labor Day is.

Over the years I have had lots of fun working on the breakfast team to cook breakfast for the entire camp which can be up to 80 people. For the last 6 sessions it has become a kind of tradition to have a crew of younger kids (ages 8 to 15) help me out with the breakfast chores. We often wear goofy hats, and now have a Sasamat Breakfast Team Chef's Apron that the crew signs every camp they help on.

Lately I spend most of my spare time with the BMW Car Club of BC. I kind of got involved in a big way not too long after getting my car. I'm one of the directors, and volunteer as membership services (I do the databases), and maintain their web site.

I am also currently a antional director and secretary of the BMW Club of Canada which is the umbrella club of the 8 memer clubs in Canada. You can find out more about that club via either of this link
www.bmwclub.ca

There is lots more to tell, but...
oh, and because some friends have asked, I dug up some photos of myelf. Rather rare, since I'm not often in front of the camera, I'm usually behind it.
